It was designed in 1930 by Camillo Olivetti, with Gino Levi Martinoli to replace the Olivetti M20. With this model, Olivetti achieved an important commercial success and freed the Italian market from the monopoly of foreign typewriters. Producticed from 1930 to 1948,

I can't find the words to express how amazed I am after receiving this beautiful Olivetti M40! It's a gem!! Beautifully preserved and restored by Christian Lepo; writing on it feels natural....my fingers feel like an extension of the keyboard, or the other way around....This is when you feel the Typewriter seems to know your mind and your hands know the machine....and it doesn't happen with all typewriters, believe me. Christian Lepo was extremely prompt to update me on the shipping process and details, within a hour of the purchase; he packed the M40 to the utmost detail, with bubble wrap, extremely carefully, and even added a wonderful gift to the order, which is most helpful for me to start writing seriously. I couldn't be happier and couldn't recommend his shop more!
